Grip
Entry titles have been short and simple lately, might be because my creative brain is short on juice thanks to the various school papers/assignments. But here we are!
The blogging journey began in June of 2018 and now it's May. What an amazing year it's been... time does fly when you're busy :)
Oh! A thing happened, I placed third at a local SSBU tourney and won a ticket to see Avengers: Endgame at one of the best theaters in Dallas. So that's awesome :)
By the time this post is released I should have already seen the movie, but until then I wait in anticipation.
Back to the tournament...
When I was in the 6th round I encountered a very, very good Lucas player. During the match-up, we both ended up winning two games bringing us to the game five tie-breaker. A dozen onlookers gathered around and began cheering for their favored character. The pressure was intense as the winner of this specific game would go on to fight the feared Penguino, a technical and game-conscious Wolf main. It drew down to the final stock and Lucas and I were dancing about the stage trying to land the final hit to win the series. When one of my shots landed sending Lucas out of the blast-zone, I dropped my controller and sighed, hands shaky and trembling.
I was promptly eliminated in the following game, but I learned a lot about myself during that tournament... if you want to be good at something, spend your time doing it!
Like writing, my other primary hobby, it's getting a grip on WHAT brings you the most joy and then doing that in a productive manner.
And not getting distracted.
My hobbies have changed over the years, and probably will continue to change as technology and culture shift with the flow of time, but knowing what you enjoy now is important.
I've mentioned a few times how people in the US are unhappy with their lives; they feel used and abandoned by the majority culture. In a lot of these situations, those feelings are justified. Also, however, it's in our own hands what we do to change things.
We can't choose our starting place, but we can choose how we finish. No one can dictate our attitudes, only we have the power to pick our emotions/reactions.
Similar to that best-of-five match the other night, I started out losing the set and decided to focus even harder, to tune out all distractions and become the character. When you get in the "zone" watch the things you can accomplish!
When I was writing my first novel last year, all 32 chapters were written in four months because I was focused, engaged, and driven. That is another prime example of what life should be about, spending time on the worthwhile and lasting things (and including God in every project)!
Signing off for now.
Next post will come out when I'm back in Minnesota :D
